Abstract

1425472 Heat pipes; heat transmission G APPLEGATE 29 Jan 1973 [27 Jan 1972] 3817/72 Headings F4U and F4S An annular heat pipe comprises inner and outer cylindrical tubes 11, 10 sealed together at their ends to define a closed annular cavity 12, each of the inner wall surfaces of the cavity being provided with a separate capillary structure which may consist of layers of a fine copper gauze or of glass, natural or synthetic fibres. The external wall surfaces of the heat pipe are provided with longitudinal or radial fins 20, 21. A plurality of the heat pipes may be arranged in spaced parallel relationship and extending between two parallel gas ducts for transferring heat from one gas stream to the other, Fig. 3 (not shown). The heat pipes may be inserted vertically into the ground below a road or runway to transfer heat to the surface in cold weather.
