Abstract
1425195 Producing iron powder MANNESMANN AG 17 May 1973 [29 June 1972] 23661/73 Heading C7X Ferrous powder of selected bulk density is produced by atomizing a poured stream of liquid iron or steel melt with pressurized water to obtain a raw powder and annealing the powder to reduce its C and O content, pure O 2 or O 2 -enriched air being added at elevated pressure to the atomization water to enrich its O 2 content so that the partial pressure of O 2 is higher than normal, the enriched water serving to produce a thicker oxidized layer on the particles than would normally result, so that on annealing of the powder and consequent removal of oxygen therefrom, the surface of individual particles becomes spongy and the bulk density is reduced. H 2 O 2 may also be added to the water, so that it decomposes to produce O 2 .
