Abstract

1425052 Separating hydrocarbons from mixtures EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 31 May 1973 [2 June 1972 (2)] 26022/73 Heading C5E Complexible ligands are separated from a feedstream by contacting it with a sorbent comprising a cuprous (I) salt selected from CuAlCl 4 , CuBF 4 , CuCOOCF 3 , CuFF 6 , CuBCl 4 , CuAlBr 4 , CuAlCl x Br y and CuAlCl x#y , wherein x+y is 4 and # is phenyl, dissolved in a solvent comprising more than 50 mole per cent of a multiringed aromatic selected from biphenyl, alkylsubstituted biphenyl, polyphenyl alkane, substituted polyphenyl alkane, naphthalene and an alkyl substituted naphthalene and a minor amount of an aromatic having only one complexing ring and boiling in the range 150-450‹ C. The examples describe the separation of ethylene and propylene from mixtures using CuAlCl 4 as the cuprous salt, diphenylmethane, biphenyl and isopropylbiphenyl as the multiringed aromatic and benzene, cyclohexyl benzene, triisopropyl benzene, and ortho-chloro biphenyl as the aromatic with one complexible ring. The ligand-cuprous salt complex can be stripped with the product ligands to remove impurities before decomposing the complex to release the ligands. The decomposition can be performed by flashing at a higher temperature than that at which the complex is formed.
