Abstract
1484775 Separating hydrocarbons by complex formation EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 10 Jan 1975 1067/75 Heading C5E [Also in Division C2] A ligand L, which may be a C 2-20 open chain mono-olefin, a C 5-10 cyclic mono-olefin or a C 2-6 acetylene, is separated from a feedstream by (a) contacting the latter with a compound CuMRX 3 to form a complex CuMRX 3 .n(L) where M is Al or B, X is Cl, Br or F, R is C 1-4 alkyl, phenyl, C 7-10 alkaryl or such radicals substituted by halogen, and n is 0À1-2À0, such contact being effected in the liquid phase in the absence of oxygen and water; (b) contacting the complex in at least one exchange reaction with a stripping ligand that forms a more stable complex with the copper compound than the ligand L; and (c) recovering the exchanged ligand L and an organometallicstripping ligand complex. Alternatively, the feedstream may be contacted with a complex CuMRX 3 .n(L<SP>1</SP>) where L<SP>1</SP> (which may be benzene) forms a less stable complex than L so that these ligands are exchanged, followed by heating to decomplex the newly formed complex and regenerate L. In examples, ethylene is separated from a mixture with ethane, and propylene from a mixture with propane, by the use of a benzene complex of CuAlC 2 H 5 Cl 3 and CuAlCH 3 Cl 3 respectively.
