Abstract
1378951 Distilling hydrocarbons AGENCE NATIONALE DE VALORISATION DE LA RECHERCHE 24 Feb 1972 [26 Feb 1971] 8658/72 Heading C5E Hydrocarbons are separated by fractionally distilling the hydrocarbon mixture in contact with a phase containing an organometallic compound of Li, Na or K in which the metallic atoms are reversibly replaceable by mobile hydrogen atoms derived from at least one hydrocarbon in the mixture, and collecting (a) a liquid phase enriched with the hydrocarbon, in partly metallated form having mobile hydrogen atoms which are most readily replaceable by the metallic atoms, and (b) a vapour phase enriched with the hydrocarbon having least affinity for the metallic atoms. The liquid phase may be distilled to recover the hydrocarbon having most affinity for the metallic atoms in its unmetallated form. The organometallic compound may be used in the form of a dispersion or solution in an inert solvent which does not itself undergo metallation under the conditions of the separation, e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon or aromatic tertiary amine or in an excess of the compound having mobile hydrogen atoms from which it is derived. The solution or dispersion may also contain (I) a tertiary amine as. basic catalyst, (2) a chelating agent, e.g. a polyamine; and (3) a hydrocarbyl compound of Mg, Zn or Al. The process may be used to separate saturated hydrocarbons from aromatic hydrocarbons or the isomers of alkyl benzenes or alkylnaphthalenes. Examples describe the separation of xylene isomers by distillation in the presence of phenylsodium or the Na or K derivatives of dimethylaniline dissolved in dimethylaniline, cumene or t-butylbenzene
