Abstract

1425013 Electro-physical measurement-temperature BRITISH STEEL CORP 12 July 1973 [14 July 1972] 33118/72 Heading G1N The invention relates to the electromagnetic measurement of the temperature of hot metal, e.g. in a rolling mill by variation of its resistance to eddy currents. A sudden change is made in a unidirectional magnetic field and the rate of decay of the resulting eddy currents is sensed to estimate the resistance. DETECTING EDDY CURRENTS. As shown a field coil 16 for "magnetizing" the sample is pulse energized through a transistor switch 22 controlled by a squarewave oscillator 26. The eddy currents are sensed by the voltage induced in the coil during the "power off" periods. Any noise signals are also picked up in an adjacent coil 18 and subtracted from the induced voltage signal from coil 16 in a differential amplifier 28. MEASURING DECAY RATE. Clockpulses are counted while the signal decays past two thresholds. As shown the induced voltage is applied to two level detectors L1, L2, set for e.g. 5 volts and 1 volt. The output from L1 is inverted so that triple-coincidence-gate 40 is opened to energize the counter when the level drops below 5 volts until it reaches 1 volt. The enabling pulse for gate 40 is delayed slightly at 44, to avoid initial transients. The counter is reset every 100 and drives a 7 decade display which may be arranged to read directly in temperature e.g. by adjusting the threshold levels.
