Abstract
1424422 Acoustic insulation of boats' engines H E ERIKSSON J ERIKSSON and F ERIKSSON 7 March 1973 [10 March 1972 27 Oct 1972] 11170/73 Headings B7S and B7V A boat's engine 12 is housed in a box 64 which is mounted on vibration damping material 68 within and spaced from the walls of a cavity in the boat's hull. The material 68 is in the form of a rubber mat having protrusions on its surfaces, Fig. 3 (not shown). Part or all of the remainder of the space between the box and the cavity may be filled with damping material. The box and engine are held in place by a fitting 76 which is releasable so that the box can be withdrawn through the stern of the boat. Hatches 80 and 88 in the box and hull allow access to the engine. Fittings 84 permit the entry of tubes and cables to the box. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the box is movable vertically into and out of the hull cavity and an inboard drive is employed. Part of the propeller drive shaft is itself located in a housing which in turn is mounted on damping material within a hull cavity. The engine is coupled to the propeller shaft by a clutch, the driven component of which is flush with an outer face of the engine box so that the box can readily be inserted into the cavity after which the propeller shaft can be coupled to it.
