Abstract
1424274 Drying particulate materials; cooling granular materials GEORG FISCHER AG 30 April 1973 [1 May 1972] 20519/73 Headings F4G and F4U An apparatus for cooling or drying a particulate material 3, e.g. pre-treated foundry sand, comprises a vertically extending tank 1 having a material supply passageway 2 at its upper end, a vertically extending, perforate gaseous medium feed pipe 4 aligned below the passageway 2 and a plurality of ring discs 6 surrounding and at spaced intervals slong the gas feed pipe 4. Annular spaces 10, 11 are formed between the outer peripheries of the discs and the tank and the inner peripheries of the discs and the gas feed pipe 4. A preferably variable speed, discharge device 8 is located adjacent the lower end of the tank for discharging the material after its downward passage through the tank. In use of the apparatus the material forms generally frusto-conical layers supported by the rings and surrounding the feed pipe, and when gaseous medium is supplied to the feed pipe, successive layers of material in a direction towards the lower end of the feed pipe are treated by progressively lower volume rates of gaseous medium per unit volume of the particulate material. As shown the gas feed pipe 4 is frusto conical and is provided with equal area circular openings. Alternatively the gas feed pipe 4 may be cylindrical (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) and have rectangular shaped openings (Fig. 2) or circular openings of decreasing area (Fig. 3). The pipe may be formed of a plurality of nested frusto-conical rings (Fig. 4, not shown). The rings may be of the same dimensions (as shown) or have different outside diameters and be spaced at the same or different distances. The supply of gas and the starting of the discharge device is triggered by a level gauge 17 which is actuated once the tank 1 is full of the material.
