Abstract
1424003 Refining copper IMI REFINERY HOLDINGS Ltd 4 Sept 1973 [22 Aug 1972] 39095/72 Heading C7D Secondary copper is refined by causing the molten metal to ascend an inclined path by means of electro-magnetic forces exerted on it while subjecting the metal to the action of one or more refining agents to reduce the impurity content of the metal. The inclined path may be in the form of a launder pump comprising a refractory lined channel with electro-magnetic means for advancing the molten metal up the channel and means for blowing air or gas on to or into the molten metal and/or means for applying heat to the molten metal. The refining process may be carried out using a plurality of launder pumps in each of which a different refining reaction occurs or in a launder pump having a plurality of successive zones in each of which a different refining reaction is carried out or may be carried out using a conventional converter in conjunction with a launder pump. Molten copper may be refined by treatment with silica flux, oxygen containing gases, caustic flux, phosphor copper or phosphate slag and reducing gases (e.g. propane, hydrogen or ammonia) as the refining agents in the process of the invention, removing iron, zinc, lead, tin and oxygen.
