Abstract

1423799 Gas turbine combustion apparatus GENERAL MOTORS CORP 4 April 1974 [12 April 1973] 14998/74 Heading F1L [Also in Division F4] Gas turbine combustion apparatus comprises a casing 2 containing a liner 3 having a wall 12 defining a primary air inlet 14, prevaporization zone 15, flare 16, and combustion, residence and dilution zones 18, 19, 20 respectively. Casing 2 has an enlarged upstream portion 7 receiving through pipes 10 pre-heated air, some of which flows to primary inlet 14, whilst the major portion of the remainder is caused by baffle 54 to flow through a cooling path 52 defined between an imperforate portion of liner 3 and a shroud 47 before entering dilution zone 20 through holes 46. Shroud 47 is freely mounted by angularly spaced plates 48, so welded to liner 3 and engaging slots in the shroud. Distortion of the latter is prevented by spacers 51. The upstream end of liner 3 is supported via struts 38 by a fuel supply ring 28 connected through fuel pipes 30 to a mounting 31. Fuel is injected from chamber 34 through tangential ports 35 in ring 28 to mix with and be vaporized by the pre-heated primary air flowing through and around the ring. Struts 38 do not produce any swirl in the air-flow. The fuel/air mixture is guided from zone 15 through flare 16 by a curved centrebody 39 carrying V-shaped sheet metal struts 40 defining flow passages 42. Centre body 39 and struts 40 are hollow to assist conduction of heat from combustion zone 18 to the fuel/air mixture. Mixing of the latter upon reaching combustion zone 18 is promoted by vanes 44 which induce toroidal vortex flow.
