Abstract

1423648 Nitrodiphenylamine azo dyes IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 May 1973 [14 July 1972] 33077/72 Heading C4P Novel dyestuffs of the formula which contain at least one -OH or -SO 2 NH 2 group but are free from -SO 3 H and -CO 2 H groups and wherein Y is -NO 2 , -CN, -SCN or -X-(CH 2 ) n -D in which X is a direct link or -SO 2 O-, -SO 2 -, -CONR-, -CO-, -COO-, -O-, -S-, -NR- or -NRCO, R being H or an optionally substituted alkyl or aryl radical, n is an integer from zero to 12 and D is H or a carbocyclic or heterocyclic radical, provided that when X is -SO 2 O- and n is zero then D is heterocyclic; m is 1 or 2; each of the -N=N-Q groups is attached to a carbon atom of ring A or to a carbon atom of a carbocyclic radical D; Q is an optionally substituted aryl or heterocyclic radical; and rings A, B and D may optionally be substituted by halogen, optionally substituted alkyl or aryl, alkoxy, mono- or di-alkylamino, mono- or or di-arylamino, -CONH 2 , alkoxycarbonyl, acyl, OH or -SO 2 NH 2 , are prepared (a) by diazotizing an amine of the formula wherein V is halogen, coupling with QH to give a compound of the formula (one specific example of which is also prepared in one example by reacting 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzene sulphonyl chloride with 4-hydroxymethyl - 4<SP>1</SP> - dimethylaminoazobenzene) and then reacting with an appropriate aniline compound to give a product of the formula or (b) by reacting together compounds of the formulµ to give a compound of the formula or (c) coupling QH with a diazotized amine of one of the formulµ or (d) reacting together compounds of the formulµ wherein Q<SP>1</SP> is as Q to give the appropriate disazo dyestuffs. 4 - Hydroxymethyl - 4<SP>1 </SP>- dimethylaminoazobenzene is prepared by coupling diazotized 4- aminobenzyl alcohol with dimethylaniline. The novel dyestuffs give yellow to red shades on synthetic textile materials such as polyesters, cellulose acetates, polyamides, polyacrylontriles and polyurethanes and blends thereof with natural fibres such as wool and cellulosic fibres,
