Abstract

1423384 Carbon black granules SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 6 March 1973 [8 March 1972] 10744/73 Heading C1A Soot granules are prepared by mixing a pumpable suspension of soot in water, i.e. an aqueous soot suspension containing not substantially more than 5% by wt. of soot, with a particulate solid organic and/or inorganic binder, removing water from the resulting mixture to form a paste, forming said paste into granules and drying said granules. The dried granules may then be heated at a temperature in the range 120‹ to 3000‹ C. in a non-oxidative atmosphere, i.e. an atmosphere containing no free oxygen or not exceeding 10% by volume of free oxygen. The binder may be clay in an amount of 5-200 wt. per cent based on the soot, and the clay containing particles may be heated to 500‹ to 2000‹ C. after drying. The binder may also be a synthetic organic polymer, and may have a fibrous structure, the thermal treatment in this case being at 300‹ to 400‹ C. Another possible binder is glass powder which may be added in an amount of 2 to 40% based on the soot, the following thermal treatment then being carried out at a temperature within the softening range of the glass. A further suggested binder is bitumen, which is added to the soot suspension as a suspension of bitumen powder in water, preferably in an amount of to 20% by wt. bitumen based on the soot. In this case the thermal treatment may be at 350‹ to 800‹ C. and may be carried out in an atmosphere containing steam. Another suggested binder is water-glass when the thermal treatment is carried out at 120‹ to 1000‹ C. The initial pumpable suspension of soot may be obtained by washing, with water, gases obtained by the partial combustion of hydrocarbons. The granules so obtained seem to be useful absorbent materials.
