Abstract

1405755 Absorbent carbon pellets by pelletizing carbon black SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 30 Aug 1972 [1 Sept 1971] 40792/71 Heading C1A Carbon pellets of increased mechanical strength and suitable for use as an absorption agent are obtained from an aqueous suspension of soot, i.e. that originating as a by-product in the manufacture of synthesis or town gas by the partial combustion of hydrocarbons, by agitating this suspension in the presence of a hydrocarbon binder and a pellet reinforcing additive, separating the pellets formed by such agitation from the liquid phase, drying the pellets and heating the dried pellets at a temperature in the range 300‹ C. to 3000‹ C., the said hydrocarbon binder being volatile under the drying conditions whilst said pellet reinforcing additive is non-volatile in these conditions, but being capable at a temperature in the range 300‹ C. to 3000‹ C. to which the pellets are heated of melting or decomposing such that on cooling the so-heated pellets have a greater mechanical strength and substantially the same porosity as pellets formed in the absence of said additive or without the heating. The additive may be a bituminous material, which may be supplied as a solution, or as a dispersion of fine particles in the binder, and the particles formed are then heated at 350‹ C. to 800‹ C. in an atmosphere containing little or no oxygen. This atmosphere may contain or consist of steam. Alternatively the additive may be fibres or filaments, e.g. of organic polymer polystyrene, or nylon, when the dried pellets are heated at 300‹ C. to 400‹ C. In further alternatives, the additive is glass powder or is argillaceous material. With the argillaceous material, the dried pellets are heated at 1600 to 2000‹ C. The pellets are preferably heated in a fluidized bed. The pellets obtained may be used in sorption processes, e.g. for purifying water. Other fibrous additives suggested are cellulose, wool, metal wool, and glass wool.
