Abstract
1423035 Injection moulding BICC Ltd 25 Jan 1974 [26 Jan 1973] 4142/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division H2] In a method of repairing an article or joining articles formed of or having an outer layer of thermoplastic material, e.g. an electric cable, molten thermoplastic material is injected into a mould at a rate sufficient to ensure that material passing through the mould and out through a discharge port melts the surface of the or each article, the quantity of material injected being greater than the space within the mould. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a heated storage chamber 1 (Fig. 1) with an outlet 2 for connection to a mould, an auxiliary chamber 5 containing a slug of solid polythene and an injection gun 7 incorporating an injection ram 12 (Fig. 2) operated by a spring 14. The ram 12 is actuated by releasing a latch 16 which engages a stop 17 carried by the ram. Latch 16 is released by means of a trigger 15 against the action of a spring 19, the trigger having a safety catch (18) Fig. 3 (not shown). The ram 12 may be operated by more than one spring or, alternatively, by fluid pressure. The volume of material injected may be varied by adjusting the positions from or to which the ram 12 is displaced.
