Lighting fires ; convertible coal and gas stoves: gas fires.-An atmospheric gas burner adapted to be secured within a domestic fire-place, as shown in Fig. 6, for lighting a fire therein, or for use when a coal fire is not required for heating a kettle or the like, or for rendering asbestos pieces piled thereon incandescent, is constructed with a ring having downwardly-directed orifices, so that the flame jets impinge on a deflecting-plate beneath, as shown in Fig. 4, or with laterally and inwardly directed orifices, so that the flames impinge on an encircling hood or shield L, as shown in Fig. 7. The flames, in both cases, finally turn upwards and pass through the ring. In a modification, Fig. 8, two sets of downwardly-directed orifices are provided, the flames from the outer set, after impinging against the deflecting-plate, rising outside the ring. The mixing-tube C is elongated and may be cranked as shown in Fig. 6, the gas nipple being placed at a distance from the fire. The burner is secured to the bars of the grate bottom by studs and nuts K. Radial webs G, Fig. 4, may be provided to prevent coal from falling into the centre of the burner.
