Abstract
1422305 Melting ferrous scrap CENTRE DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES-CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 25 April 1974 [25 April 1973] 18210/74 Heading C7D Scrap is melted by a burner supplied with oxygen and fluid hydrocarbon fuel in such proportions that a combustion gas is recovered which is reducing to iron and iron oxides. The flame temperature is preferably at least 2000‹C, achieved by pre-heating the oxygen to about 1000‹C, pre-heating the fuel, possibly sufficiently to precrack it, augmenting the fuel by addition of carbon and supplying sufficient additional oxygen to stoichiometrically convert the latter to carbon monoxide, or by auxiliary electrical heating, e.g. at a rate W=0.4R where W is the power input in kW and R is the fuel supply rate in kg/hr. The recovered combustion gas may be injected directly into a blast furnace as an auxiliary reducing agent.
