Abstract
1422244 Drying air CHAUMECA 9 March 1973 [10 March 1972] 11532/73 Heading B1L Air delivered by a compressor 1 is dried by passage through a first unit 3 comprising a heat exchanger 9 and a cooler 8, and a second unit 6 comprising a cooler 19 and moisture adsorbent driers 16, 17 provided with valves 15, 18, 21-24 operable to allow use of one drier while the other is being regenerated. With the valves 15, 18 and a valve 11 in the position shown, hot and humid oil entrained compressed air flows in turn through the cooler 8, an oil remover 4, a coil 12 in the exchanger 9 and thence via a non-operative heater 28 to the second unit 6 where it passes through the drier 16 to an outlet pipe 7. When the adsorbent in the drier 16 becomes saturated the valves II and 18 are changed over. This directs the compressor output through the heat exchanger 9 where the heat of compression is given up, the air then passing through the cooler 8 and oil remover 4 before recovering the heat of compression by passage through the coil 12. The temperature of the air is further raised by passage through the now operative heater 28. From the heater 28 the air flows through the drier 16 to effect its regeneration and then via the non-return valve 24, cooler 19, non-return valve 21 and the other drier 17 to the outlet 7. After regeneration the drier 16 is cooled. This is effected by de-activating the heater 28 and returning the valve 11 to its position shown, whereby cool air enters the drier 16. Next the valve 15 is changed over so that the drier 16 is cut out and the drier 17 is used alone. While the drier 17 is in use, the drier 16 is further cooled by being in a closed circuit with the cooler 19 and the non-return valves 22, 24. Regeneration of the drier 17 is accomplished in an analogous fashion when required. Thermostats 25, 26 are provided. Another embodiment Figs. 1-6 (not shown) differs in that the heater 28 and thermostats 25, 26 are omitted and the valves are replaced by four, four-way valves.
