1422219 Boots &c A POWERS 13 April 1973 [13 April 1972] 17950/73 Heading A3B A shoe, e.g. an athletic shoe, includes a pair of sidewalls 16, 18 formed from a soft pliable material, and a pair of supporting members 26, 28 which extend over the sidewalls 16, 18 and which are joined to the sole 10 at their lower edges and which are provided with fastening means at their upper edges for securing the members 26, 28 together. The lower edge of each member 26, 28 has a cutout 40 and extends from a point 34 just behind the ball 36 of the foot rearwardly to a point 38. The members 26, 28 are joined to sidewalls 16, 18 by stitching 59 and are provided with lacing rings 42 to 45. The forward ends of the sidewalls 16, 18 are provided with lacing eyelets 51-53, the shoe being fastened on the foot by a lace extending through eyelets 51-53 and rings 42-45. The tongue 20 extends from the toe 12 of the shoe between the sidewalls 16, 18 and consists of an upper layer and a lower layer joined together at their peripheries, and padding between the layers in that portion of the tongue which contacts the top of the foot. The upper and lower layers of the tongue have skived edges and the upper layer is wider than the lower layer so that the sides of the tongue naturally curl downwards. The heel region of the shoe includes a counter stiffener 74 which is covered by an outer layer 76, a layer of padding 72 and a soft lining 70. The padded region extends above the counter stiffener 74 and 80 and also along the top line region of the shoe. The top line extends downwardly from point 80 to a point 88 below the ankle bone and then up to a point 86. The shoe is also provided with a pulling on tab 78.
