Abstract

1422030 Block copolymerization DENKI KAGAKU KOGYO KK 6 Dec 1973 56644/73 Heading C3P Block copolymers are obtained by (a) polymerizing a mixture of a conjugated diene and 30 to 70% of styrene or an alkyl-substituted styrene in a non-polar solvent in the presence of a polyfunctional organolithium initiator to at least 40% diene conversion and (b) adding further styrene monomer, or a mixture thereof with up to 5% of a conjugated diene as a polymerization retardent, in sufficient amounts to ensure a final copolymer containing 70 to 85% styrene monomer, and completing the polymerization. In examples butadiene-styrene mixtures are polymerized using butadiene oligomer dilithium in benzene, followed by styrene or mixtures thereof with butadiene or isoprene, including comparative procedures just outside the above limits. Sheets and films with good low temperature impact strength may be formed from the polymers and may be used for packing refrigerated foodstuffs.
