Abstract
1421642 Continuous casting INSTITUT DE RECHERCHES DE LA SIDERURGIE FRANCAISE 16 Jan 1973 [21 Jan 1972] 7595/75 Divided out of 1421641 Heading B3F Apparatus for cooling a vertical continuously cast strand 2 (e.g. by the method claimed in the parent Specification) has a casing 1 for the upflow of water from an annular head 4 whose axial opening 5 forms an annular chamber 6 with a number of ducts leading to the opening 5 at an angle of at least 135 degrees to the axis of the apparatus. Cooling water enters the chamber 6 from a flexible conduit 7 under pressure and the top of the casing 1 may open freely for its outflow or be restricted by a ring 10. The casing 1 is supported by a universal joint 15-17 so that the apparatus can be centred, by water or gas such as air, flowing from apertures 14 in a hollow ring 11 attached to the bottom of the head 4. The casting 2 may be rotated about its axis.
