Abstract

1421398 Sizing paper ROHM GmbH 6 Nov 1973 [9 Nov 1972] 51399/73 Heading D2B A method of sizing paper comprises treating paper pulp or the surface of a paper web with a cationic aqueous dispersion of a non-ionic synthetic resin which is capable of self-crosslinking at a temperature greater than 100‹C, the dispersion containing at least one cationic surfactant and a non-ionic emulsifying agent. Preferred non-ionic synthetic resins comprise 70-99.5% by wt. of units of an ester of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid or a mixture thereof with vinylidene chloride or styrene and/or a homologue thereof; 0.5-12% by wt. of units of an N-methylol amide or an N-methylolether amide of acrylic or methacrylic acid, and, if desired, one or more other non-ionic copolymerisable monomers, e.g. acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrlie, vinyl chloride, vinyl esters such as vinyl acetate or vinyl propionate, or olefins e.g. ethylene propylene, isobutylene, butadiene, or isopropene. The cationic surfactant may be a C 12-14 fatty amine hydrochloride, coconut amine hydrochloride, or cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride. The non-ionic emulsifying agent may be an ethoxylated fatty acid, fatty alcohol, or alkyl phenyl, or a water-soluble protective colloid such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylamide, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, or a polyalkylene oxide. Starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, alginates, acid resistant wax emulsions and pigments may be added to the dispersions. Exemplified pigments are titanium dioxide. The dispersions may be used in the manufacture of decorative papers, which may be printed on, varnished, and embossed (see Example 2) and bank-note paper (see Example 3). Synthetic fibres e.g. polyamide or polyester fibres may form part of the paper pulp or web.
