Abstract

1421345 Coated sheet materials RICOH KK 11 Dec 1972 [11 Dec 1971 (2) 28 Dec 1971] 57100/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division G2] An electrostatic recording material for producing a copy image thereon by forming an electrostatic latent image thereon and thereafter developing the latent image with an aqueous developer comprises a substrate having an electrostatic recording layer thereon, the layer comprising a resin and the contact angle of water with the said layer being from 120 to less than 180 at a temperature of 20‹C and a relative humidity of 65%. The resin may comprise a styrenated alkyd resin, a stryrene-methyl methacrylate-acrylic acid copolymer, a silicone resin, a blend of polyvinyl acetate with a silicone resin (weight ratio 3-7 to 7-3) or a blend of a styrene-butyl acrylate-methyl methacrylatebeta-hydroxyethyl methacrylate copolymer with a styrene-butyl acrylate-acrylic acid copolymer (weight ratio 1-9 to 9-1). If the recording layer has a contact angle normally less than 120, a modifying agent may be coated on to the surface of the recording layer or mixed with the components used for the layer. Suitable resins which may be thus modified include acrylic, silicone, styrenated alkyd, polyvinyl acetate, amine resins, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, cellulose resins, polycarbonates, phenolic resins and their copolymers and mixtures of two or more thereof. Suitable modifying agents are silicone oils, fatty acid esters of monohydric alcohols, carboxylic acid esters of fluorinated alcohols, carboxylic acid esters of phosphoric acid, polybutene, 1, 4-dialkyl naphthalenes (wherein each alkyl group contains 1-5 carbon atoms), alkyl diphenyls (wherein the alkyl groups contain 1-6 carbon atoms), mineral oils, liquid paraffin, low molecular weight polyamides, low molecular weight epoxy resins, low molecular weight rubbers, low molecular weight polyesters and oilmodified phenolic resins. Suitable supports for the copying materials are paper, film and metal plates. A support of paper processed for electrical conductivity is preferably first treated on one side with a hydrophobic material, e.g. one of the modifying materials hereinbefore described.
