Abstract

1420839 Electrographic toner compositions EASTMAN KODAK CO 24 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 24842/73 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Divisions G2-G3] Electrographic dry particulate toner compositions comprise (1) a resin and (2) a quaternary ammonium charge control agent of formula where each R is an aliphatic hydrocarbon group containing up to 7 carbon atoms and X- is an anion. The toners may also comprise colorants, and may be prepared by spray-drying solutions of the compositions in volatile solvents, e.g. diehloromethane; and may be blended with particulate carriers, e.g. glass beads, inorganic salts, hard resin particles or metal particles. The resin may be a polymer of styrene and/or an alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, a polyester, a polycarbonate, a polyamide, a phenol/ formaldehyde resin or an alkyd or modified alkyd resin. Hydrocarbon groups in the quaternary ammonium compound may be methyl, ethyl, butyl, pentyl or heptyl. The anion may be halide, phosphate, acetate, nitrate, benzoate, methosulphate, perchlorate, tetrafluoroborate, benzenesulphonate or hexafluorophosphate. In examples oxidized iron carriers are blended with toners comprising (1, 3 and 4) poly-(4,41-isopropylidene diphenylene-alt-ethylene carbonate) resin or (2) polystyrene containing carbon black pigment and as charge control agents (1) tetrapentyl ammonium chloride, tetraheptyl ammonium chloride, tetrapentyl ammonium hexafluorophosphate, tetraethyl ammonium benzoate, tetraethyl ammonium acetate tetrahydrate, tetrapentyl ammonium bromide, tetrabutyl ammonium iodide or tetrabutyl ammonium nitrate; (2) tetrapentyl ammonium chloride; (3) tetrabutyl ammonium nitrate; and (4) tetrapentyl ammonium chloride.
