Abstract

1420809 Hydrogenating hydrocarbon oils DOW CHEMICAL CO 20 July 1973 34741/73 Heading C5E A mixture of gasoline blend stock and fuel oil is produced from a hydrocarbon feed boiling within the range 220-650‹ F. and containing up to 10 wt. per cent of tars and gums by contacting a mixture of the feed with hydrogen, in a mole ratio of hydrogen to olefinic content of the feed (olefinic content is defined as the aliphatic and cycloaliphatic unsaturation), with a catalyst of 0À2 to 5 wt. per cent Pt or Pd on a porous carrier (e.g. alumina spheres) at 100- 1000 p.s.i.g., 100-200‹ C. and a L.H.S.V. of 0À5 to 10. The effluent is cooled and the liquid material distilled to produce a 204‹ C. end point gasoline as overhead and a stabilized, deodorized fuel oil as bottoms. The feed to the hydrogenation can be a by-product of the pyrolysis of liquified petroleum gas, naphtha or gas oil.
