Abstract

1420116 Tobacco smoke filters CIGARETTE COMPONENTS Ltd 4 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 41583/73 Heading A2C A tobacco smoke filter 106 comprises an inner member 108 of filtering material having completely enclosed therein a cavity 118 having a lower resistance to the passage of smoke than the filtering material, the inner member being located within a wrapping 112. Passage of smoke between the inner member and the wrapping is prevented by an integral portion of the inner member which contacts the inner surface of the wrapping. The cavity may contain a sorbent smoke-modifying material such as activated carbon. Such filters are produced in a device including a bonding region 26 and a reciprocal mandrel 44. Fibres of the filter material are bonded together by steam injected through a conduit 36 while the mandrel reciprocates to form the cavities. The mandrel is hollow so as to allow the injection of sorbent material.
