Abstract
1419894 Burner controls F GUIGUES and M PILLARD 3 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 21109/73 Heading F4T The degree of openness of a combustion air valve 6 and a fuel valve 4 are controlled automatically by a positioning control having a cam 5a and pivoted arms 11 to maintain the volumetric air/fuel flow ratio generally constant, and the operation of this control is corrected, e.g. to account for temperature changes, to maintain a substantially constant air/fuel mass flow rate ratio by a servo-mechanism 10 automatically varying the length one of the arms 11 as a function of an electrical signal, which is proportional to the opacity to light of the combustion fumes and is provided by an opacimeter 7, 13a, 13b. A probe 1 senses a parameter linked to the combustion, e.g. water temperature or steam pressure in a boiler, and is connected to a regulator 2 giving an analogue output signal in the form of a modulated pressure for pneumatic controls or a modulated voltage for electric or electronic controls. The output signal acts through a relay 3, allowing manual and automatic burner control, on a motorized, e.g. pneumatic, fuel valve 4, and on a servomotor 5 controlling positioning of a cam 5a and, through the arms 11, positioning of air valve 6 to maintain the volumetric air/fuel ratio generally constant. Cam 5a may alternatively be operated directly by the valve 4 or valves 4 and 6 may each have respective cams in their controls. A light source 13a and reflected-light receiving photocell 13b, which may be connected to control box 7 via optical fibres 7a, yield an electrical signal to an apparatus 8 providing two thresholds. If the incoming signal exceeds one threshold or the other an electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic, doubleacting ram 10 increases or decreases respectively the length of rod 11, and if the signal is between the thresholds the rod length is not altered. The thresholds may be arranged so that the combustion fumes are maintained at a Bacharach index between 2 and 4. A double-contact cyclic circuit-breaker 9a, 9b prevents ram 10 oscillating. Air valve 6, which may be a double butterfly valve in the intake or delivery conduit of a fan 6a or an air flap, or a sleeve sliding around air openings in a burner side wall, acts on circuitbreakers 14 to prevent operation of ram 10 in the fully open and closed positions of valve 6.
