Abstract
1419590 Electro-photographic process FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 28 Dec 1973 [28 Dec 1972] 60122/73 Heading G2H An imaging process comprises imagewise exposing to light a layer of charged photoconductive toner powder containing a colourant or colourant precursor on a conductive support, removing the discharged (exposed) toner powder to leave a toner image on said support, spreading a second powder over the image-carrying surface of said support while said toner powder forming said image possesses sufficient charge to repel said second powder from the unexposed areas, whereby said second powder adheres predominantly to the area where the toner powder is absent, and forming a colour in the toner powder using said colourant or said colourant precursor contained in said toner powder. The colourant is preferably a single composition that is coloured by heating, such as an organic salt of silver, copper or iron. Alternatively it may comprise two ingredients incorporated in two different photo-conductive powders which are mixed before use, or one may be in the core substance of the powder particles and the other in their surface layers, the two ingredients being reacted together in the colour forming step by means of a solvent or heat. Heat is used to fix both the toner image and the second powder which latter is preferably formed of similar or the same material as the core of the photo-conductive toner powder, and materials exemplified for one or both of these include polyamides, polyesters, polystyrene, a styrene/ methyl methacrylate copolymer, polymethyl methacrylate, and an epoxy resin. Zinc oxide is the exemplified photo-conductive constituent of the toner powder, but titanium dioxide or organic photo-conductive materials may be used. The conductive support may be a metal plate, a plastics film, a surface-metallized paper, or a paper, plastics or fabric material which has been treated with colloidal alumina or colloidal silica.
