Abstract

1419396 Making corrosion resistant components OMF CALIFORNIA Inc 6 Dec 1972 [16 Dec 1971] 56217/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division E1] A method of making a corrosion resistant component comprises depositing a noble metal layer on a metal substrate, diffusing the noble metal into the surface of the substrate by a heat-treatment operation and coating the heattreated substrate with a layer of corrosionresistant material. An alloy of Cu-Al-Ni-Fe forming a substrate is hardened thermally to 350-600 VPN and coated electrolytically with a gold bonding layer. The coated substrate is placed in a tube through which is passed pure hydrogen or an 80% N 2 -20% H 2 mixture, The tube is flushed with the gas and then placed in an oven at 400‹ C. and left for 25-45 minutes after the substrate has reached its maximum temperature. The tube is removed progressively so that the substrate temperature falls to 100‹ C. in about 10 minutes, the tube being then removed and allowed to cool. The heat-treated substrate is finally coated with Ru in a commercial electrolytic bath. The noble metal layer is preferably Au or Au alloy, but may be Pt or Pd. The corrosion resistant material is preferably Rh or Ru but may be Cr or a precious metal selected from the platinum group or their alloys. Alternatively it may be enamel.
