Abstract

1419092 Cellular plastics/bituminous compositions COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 30 March 1973 [6 April 1972] 15939/72 Headings C3R and C3N A cellular plastics material comprising 5- 90% by wt. of coal digest (i.e. formed by treating coal with a solvent at an elevated temperature), 10-90% by wt. of a thermoset resin compatible with the coal digest in the proportion used, other than an epoxy resin or a natural or synthetic rubber and less than 10% by wt. of a finely divided filler, and having at least 60% by vol. of cells is made by foaming, e.g. with a chemical blowing agent or by whipping or entraining a gas, a mixture of the above coal digest and a thermosetting resin which is then cured. In the examples coal digest, made by treating coal with coal tar pitch at 300‹ C., and extended with anthracene oil was mixed with either (1) bis-(4-isocyanatophenyl)methane, anthracene oil, stannous octanoate, silicone surfactant and water, or (2) an isocyanurate formed by trimerizing di(4-isocyanatophenyl)methane, trichlorofluoromethane and a mixture of compounds having at least two hydroxyl groups/ molecule, catalysts and surfactants, and both mixtures foamed to produce semi-rigid and rigid cellular materials respectively.
