Abstract

1434621 Foamable polycarbonate compositions GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 19 Dec 1973 [2 Jan 1973] 58866/73 Heading C3C A foamable flame-retardant injection mouldable composition comprises (a) a thermoplastic aromatic carbonate polymer which is (1) a polycarbonate of a bromine or chlorine substituted dihydric phenol and/or (2) a copolycarbonate of a halogen-free dihydric phenol and a bromine or chlorine substituted dihydric phenol, or (3) a mixture of (1) and/or (2), with a polycarbonate of a halogen-free dihydric phenol; (b) a filler which is fibrous glass or a finely divided powder, in an amount of from 1 to 50 weight per cent of (a); (c) antimony oxide in an amount of from 0À10 to 5À0 weight per cent of (a) (as flame retardant); (d) a polytetrafluoroethylene resin in an amount of from 0À10 to 5-0 weight per cent of (a); and (e) a foaming agent in an amount of from 0À10 to 2À0 weight per cent of (a). The polycarbonate may be derived from bisphenol-A (i.e. 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane or tetrabromobisphenol - A. The foaming agent may be dinitrosopentamethylene tetramine, p-toluene sulphonyl semicarbazide, 5 - phenyltetrazole, calcium oxalate or trihydrazino - s - triazine. The compositions were injection moulded in the examples.
