Abstract

1418970 Sailing craft: Pressure gauge T C OBRIEN 27 Oct 1973 50112/73 Headings G1L G1N and G1R A sailing craft is provided with one or more devices for measuring the pressure on or the airflow around the sails. In Fig. 1, the sail C is provided with a diaphragm D which applies a force proportional to the differential pressure on the sail to a pressure sensitive transistor A, the differential pressure being shown on a voltmeter E. In Fig. 3, the pressures on both sides of the sail C are transmitted by pipes I, J, to a gimbal mounted inclined manometer L. In a modification of Fig. 3 Fig. 2, (not shown) the tubes I, J lead to opposite sides of a diaphragm D mounted in a wall dividing a chamber into two halves, the diaphragm D acting on a pressure sensitive transistor A as in Fig. 1. In Fig. 4, the device of Fig. 2 or Fig. 3 is modified to respond to the dynamic pressure of the air-flow across the sail. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), air-flow measuring devices are mounted on the spars or stays of a sailing boat.
