Abstract

1418943 Metallic phosphides SIEMENS AG 26 March 1973 [4 April 1972] 14499/73 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] An electrode for use in electrochemical cells, electrolysis or electrosynthesis comprises at least one phosphide of one or more of the metals copper, silver, gold, manganese, technetium, rhenium, iron, cobalt and nickel, the phosphide having at least one atom of phosphorus per atom of metal, e.g. CuP 2 , Au 2 P 3 , MnP 3 , FeP 2 , FeP, CoP 3 , CoP, NiP 3 and NiP 2 . The phosphide can contain at least two different metals, e.g. Cu and Fe. The phosphide can be in powdered form of 2-50Á particle diameter and, mixed with a butadiene-styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer binder, may be incorporated between a diaphragm and a supporting network. Other catalytically active substances can be added to the metal phosphide, e.g. organic semi-conductors such as the phthalocyanines, silver-containing tungsten carbide and the Pt group metals Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt. The metal phosphides can be prepared by heating powdered phosphorus and powdered metal together with an additive, such as carbon, which remains in the end product or sodium fluoride which is subsequently dissolved out, to increase the surface area of the electrode obtained. Alternatively, the metal phosphide can be produced by reducing metal pyrophosphates with hydrogen. In addition metal phosphides with a higher phosphorus content can be produced by phosphidation of metal phosphides which are easy to handle in air, e.g. CoP 3 from CoP.
