Abstract

A porous skeleton electrode, especially of the sintered type used in batteries and fuel cells, is impregnated with active constituents by electrodepositing the active metal from an electrolyte containing it in a complexed form, and also containing compounds reducible at a more positive potential than hydrogen, the pH exceeding 7 and preferably 9-12. The skeleton metal is thereby not subjected to evolution of hydrogen and is not corroded by electrolytic action. Activating metals include Fe, Co, Pb, Cd, Hg, Ag, Cu, Mg, Zn, Mn, Ni, and Bi, which may be complexed by adding ammonia or an amine dissolved in water. Compounds repressing the evolution of hydrogen are alkali metal nitrates, hydrogen peroxide, hypochlorites, chlorates, nitrites, quinone, and organic nitro-compounds. The skeleton metal may first be subjected to vacuum before flooding with the electrolyte, or may be preimpregnated with oxygen.
