1418651 Surgical stitching instruments A M VIOLANTE 30 Oct 1972 [14 Feb 1972 26 Sept 1972] 49896/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division Dl] A surgical stitching instrument comprises a generally tubular body 12, Fig. 1, means for mounting a spool 16 on one end 14 and means for mounting a hollow needle 20 on the other end 18, a recess 28 adjacent the end 18 and openings 24 and 26 for the passage of a thread 32 from the spool 16 into the lumen of the needle 20 via the recess 28. The needle 20 terminates in the recess 28 and the thread 32 of suture material may be payed out through the needle 20 by the action of a thumb in the recess 28. A nipple 44 may be provided at the side of the body 12 to hold the needle transversely of the body 12. The needle may take various forms (Figs 4, 5, 8a, 8b and 8c not shown). In another embodiment, a spool 152, Fig. 12, is retained in a large bore 154 and feeds a thread 160 through a bore 162 and the lumen of a hollow needle 164. A recess 166 is provided for use as described above. In addition the recess 166 is adapted to receive a flexible walled container 108 containing medicament and having a sealed tip 110. When the container 108 is inserted in the recess the tip 110 is pierced by the sharpened end of the needle 164 and the medicament expelled into it. The container 108 may also be used with the embodiment described above with reference to Fig. 1. A needle protecting sheath (120), Fig. 13, (not shown) is adapted to fit over the tip (174) of the instrument and carry a removable scalpel (176). A feed tube attached to the needle 164 may be used to introduce liquids into a body.
