Abstract

1417925 Laminates GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO 3 Aug 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 36966/73 Heading B5W A method of bonding natural or synthetic rubber to metal, e.g. in tyres, comprises (i) applying to the surface of the metal an organic coating material chemically compatible (defined) with the rubber, (ii) subsequently or simultaneously abrading the metal to provide a clean, smooth surface, and (iii) bonding the cleaned metal surface to the rubber. Preferably, a plurality of brass-plated steel wires are abraded simultaneously by a glass fibre or thin wire brush roller, the bottom of the roller being immersed in the protective composition. Examples of which are solutions containing methyl naphthalene, a naphthenic oil " Circosol ", refined wax (m.p. 133-135‹ F.), or paraffin oil. The wires are subsequently calendered to a rubber composition to form the carcass of a tyre wherein the wires are embedded in the rubber. A vulcanizable carbon black pigmented; natural rubber composition is given as suitable for bonding.
