Abstract

1417850 Electric selective signalling H KAFAFIAN 20 Dec 1972 [24 Feb 1972] 58855/72 Heading G4H A communication system for the handicapped comprises a single-input transducer (e.g. a switch 8) connected to apparatus which provides a dual output representing a selected row and column of a matrix 32, e.g. for the selection of a character on a typewriter keyboard (Fig. 2, not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the first closing of switch 8 sets a flip-flop CB1 to activate a generator 11 which sends pulses via a gate G5 to a driver 19 for row stepping switches RSS(1)-RSS(3). When switches RSS(1) have stepped to the desired position (row), as indicated by lamps energized by RSS(3), switch 8 is released. This sets a flip-flop CB2 to close G5 and halt the row switches RSS; a gate G7 is opened to connect generator 11 with a driver 25 for column stepping switches CSS(1)-CSS(3). When CSS(1) has reached the desired position (column) as indicated by CSS(3), switch 8 is closed again to set a flip-flop CB3 and reset CB1 (disabling generator 11). CB3 starts a print pulse generator 31 which feeds a "print" flipflop 29 whose output passes to matrix row and column drivers 34, 36 and thence via switches RSS(1), CSS(1) to the appropriate row and column of matrix 32. The output therefrom may pass to a code converter 50, and can be used to operate equipment 60 other than typewriter 38. Means 39 allows single or repeated printing of a character by 38. Releasing switch 8 finally resets the apparatus. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) it is not necessary to hold switch 8 closed to keep the switches moving; 8 is closed a second time to stop RSS and start CSS, and a third time to stop CSS and generate the output signal.
