Abstract

1417293 Fabric-foam laminate JOHNSON & JOHNSON 14 Aug 1973 [15 Aug 1972] 38459/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division A4] A wiping cloth consists of a central portion 11 of a resilient polyurethane foam and outer portions 12, 13 of rearranged non-woven fabric bonded thereto, the fabric comprising a layer of absorbent fibres arranged in a pattern of yarn-like fibre bundles 14 which define openings 15 in the fabric, each bundle comprising fibre segments which are closely associated and substantially parallel, the fibres extending between more than one bundle and meeting at junctures to provide integrity in the layer, the fibrous layer being bonded with a resin binder 17 in a predetermined pattern of spaced binder areas such as dots or crossing lines. The fabric is of cotton, rayon or acrylic fibres and is produced by carding or air-laying of the fibres followed by treatment with forces applied by liquid means to rearrange the layer into a plurality of yarn-like bundles as above. The rearranged fabric is patterned with the binder, which may be acrylic resin, PVC or polyvinyl acetate, by rotogravure printing and then flame-bonded to the foam core. The cloth possesses abrasiveness, absorption capacity and capillarity and retains dirt particles it picks up when used to wipe a surface.
