Abstract
1417285 Electrohydrodimerization process PHILLIPS PETROLEUM CO 26 July 1973 [27 July 1972] 35667/73 Heading C2C [Also in Division C7] In a continuous process of electrohydrodimerization of acrylonitrile to adiponitrile in an undivided cell, the flow of an aqueous electrolyte containing acrylonitrile, an inorganic conducting salt and an organic reaction-directing salt through the cell is periodically interrupted and the anode washed with a 1-20% aq. solution of a strong base, e.g. KOH or tetramethylammonium hydroxide. The wash liquid may be recirculated through the cell and filtered for 1- 60 mins after a cell operation period of 10-100 hrs., the electric current optionally being maintained. The inorganic salt may be a potassium phosphate and the organic salt tetrabutylammonium phosphate. H 3 PO 4 to pH 7À5-7À7 may be present. The cathode may be Pb, a Pb alloy, graphite, Ni, Hg, Au, Ag or Pt and the anode may be the same, Fe or PbO 2 . Additional products obtained include propionitrile, succinonitrile, bis - (2 - cyanoethyl)ether, methylglutaronitrile and acrylonitrile hydrotrimer.
