Abstract

1417269 Non-woven fabric MONSANTO CO 28 Dec 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 60084/73 Heading D1R An unbonded mat of nylon fibres is autogeneously bonded by (1) increasing the moisture regain of the fibres to at least 2% based on the weight of the fibres, (2) subjecting the mat to a gaseous atmosphere having a temperature of 10‹ to 49‹C and containing less than 2 % by volume of a hydrogen halide gas (hydrogen chloride is exemplified) and greater than 0.5% by volume of water vapour, but lower than the dew point of the water vapour-hydrogen halide gas mixture at the gaseous atmosphere temperature, the nylon fibres increasing their moisture regain to at least 3% based upon the weight of the fibres and absorbing at least 2% by wt. of the fibres of hydrogen halide gas, (3) pressing the fibres together while they contain water and hydrogen halide gas and (4) removing hydrogen halide gas from the fibres. In comparative example 6 in which the hydrogen chloride gas concentration is 5.5% and the water vapour concentration is only 0.3% the product is a poorly bonded fabric as judged by an abrasion test. Preferably the mat is formed by extruding continuous nylon 66 filaments alternating them and collecting them upon a foraminous conveyor staple fibre mats may also be used. In example 1 the mat, weighing 1 oz/sq. yd. (33.9 g/m<SP>2</SP>) was preconditioned in a 24‹C 60% relative humidity chamber for 40 seconds, exposed to the HCl/moisture atmosphere for 12 seconds, calendered at 190 pounds/linear inch and passed through a water bath to remove HCl. The calender rolls may be embossed.
