Abstract

1533534 Autogeneously spot bonded non- woven fabrics MONSANTO CO 14 April 1977 [15 April 1976 (2)] 15458/77 Heading D1R A nonwoven polyamide continuous or staple filament web takes up, from the vapour state both 0.1 to 20 weight percent of an activating agent, i.e. an agent for bringing about autogeneous bonding, and sufficient water to render the web unbondable by pressing at room temperature and is then bonded by the (preferably simultaneous) application of heat and pressure followed by the removal of the activating agent. The filaments may be monocomponent or bicomponent e.g. side by side or polyester sheath/nylon 66 core. As shown continuous filaments 11 formed by spinerette 12 are attenuated by air nozzle 13 and collected on belt 16 by suction box 17. The web is passed through a chamber 22 through which passes a gas stream containing activating agent (hydrogen chloride or other halide, boron trifluoride, sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide or a mixture of chlorine and sulphur dioxide) and water vapour then through chamber 23 through which passes a moist air stream. The web is then passed between rollers 26, 27 at least one of which is heated. Preferably the heated roll is embossed to produce a spot bonded fabric. Numerical details are given.
