Abstract

1416562 Treating shale in wells MILCHEM Inc 6 Feb 1973 [6 June 1972 5 Sept 1972] 5845/73 Heading E1F A process for preventing the balling and inhibiting the swelling of formation cuttings or shale in an aqueous medium with a pH of at least 7 comprises treating the medium with a polyvalent metal ion which has been complexed, with sufficient amount of acetic, citric formic lactic oxalic or tartaric acid or the alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof or mixtures thereof to prevent the precipitation of the ion in aqueous alkaline solution. The process is particularly useful in drilling.
