Abstract

Stabilising a water-sensitive formation penetrated by a well by injecting an aqueous hydroxy-aluminium solution preferably of the formula: Al(OH)nX3-n (where n = 1.5-2.7 and X is Cl, Br, I, NO3, SO4 or acetate anion). Suitable solution is prepd from AlCl3 and NaOH and injected onto the well, followed by 1-4 times the amount of fresh water. The well is shut off to allow polymerisation of the solution in the formation before re-opening. Process provides lasting protection against swelling and migrating clays.
