Abstract

1416502 Bleaching textiles PULP & PAPER RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF CANADA 25 May 1973 [30 May 1972 9 May 1973] 25117/ 73 Heading D1P A process for bleaching, of a textile in cloth or yarn form, comprises contacting the fabric adjusted to a suitable moisture content, with chlorine monoxide in admixture with an inert gas or liquid carrier. Where the carrier is a gas e.g. air, nitrogen or oxygen, the chlorine monoxide may be diluted with the gas to a partial pressure of from 1 to 253 Torr, to provide from 0.1 to 1.0% of chlorine monoxide on the weight of the dry fabric, the contacting time being from less than one second up to 300 seconds. Where the inert carrier is a liquid, it is a non polar solvent for chlorine monoxide, for example carbon tetrachloride, triahloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene or a fluorinated hydrocarbon, the contacting time being- from 1 to 30 minutes. The moisture content of the fabric may lie in the range of 80-20%. The process may be carried out to a narrow terminal pH range selected to fall within the broad range 1 to 13, preferably 'by treating the fabric with an alkali e.g. sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate, prior to the chlorine monoxide bleaching step. The chlorine monoxide bleaching step may be preceded by a de-size washing step and a caustic soda scour, and followed by a washing step and a drying step. Fabrics of natural fibres e.g. cotton, linen, jute, and hemp, alone or in combination with a man-made fibre e.g. a polyamide, polyester, rayon, cellulose acetate or triacetate, acrylic fibre or a polyolefin, may be treated.
