Abstract

Pulp, e.g. pulp obtained by the kraft and sulphite processes, is bleached by a process in which in a first stage the fluffed cellulosic pulp at a consistency of 20-60% by weight is treated with chlorine dioxide diluted to less than 100 m.m. mercury partial pressure with air, steam or an inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, for from 20 seconds to 60 minutes at 15 DEG -100 DEG C, is washed and in a second stage is treated at a consistency of 5-50% by weight with a solution of a peroxygen compound, e.g. sodium peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, peracetic acid or hydrogen peroxide, having a peroxygen equivalency of 0.025-1.5% by weight of the dry pulp, at a temperature up to 100 DEG C for 1/2 -5 hours.
