Claims (28)

What we claim is:
1. A process for the bleaching of a raw natural fibre, either alone or in combination with a synthetic fibre, either in open-width or rope form, and at a suitable moisture content, in which chlorine monoxide, in admixture with an inert gas or liquid carrier, is used as the bleaching agent.
2. The process of claim 1 in which the inert carrier is a gas.
3. The process of claim 1 in which the inert carrier is a solvent liquid for chlorine monoxide .
4. The process of any one of claims 1 - 3 inclusive in which the textile material, at a suitable moisture content, is contacted with chlorine monoxide in an amomt of 0.1 to 1.0% on the weight of the dry fabric.
5. The process of any one of claims 1 - 4 inclusive, in which said moisture content is in the range of 80 - 20%.
6. The process of any one of claims 1 - 5 inclusive, in which the process is carried out to a narrow terminal pH range selected to fall within the broad range 1 - 13.
7. The process of any one of claims 2 and 4 - 6 inclusive, when dependent on claim 2, in which said contacting time is from less than 1 second up to 300 seconds.
