Abstract
141,639. Busby, L. R. Dec. 2, 1919. Vacuum apparatus.-Relates to apparatus for raising petrol &c. from a storage tank to a service chamber, from which it is supplied by gravity to a carburettor &c., and consists in controlling the suction and atmospheric connexions of the suction chamber by needle or slide valves actuated by a single float and contained in or sliding on a tube or the like passing vertically through the suction chamber. As shown in Fig. 1, the service vessel 5 contains the suction vessel 4. A single cover 2 serves for the two vessels, is bolted to a flange on the vessel 5, and is screwed to a rod or tube which traverses the vessel 4 as described below. The suction vessel 4 communicates by a passage 19 with the upper part of the vessel 5 which is open to the atmosphere, and has a hinged or other non-return valve 14 for the delivery of the petrol to the service vessel. A tube 6 traverses the vessel 4, and can be put in communication with the suction tube 8 through a passage 17, with the atmosphere through passages 18, 19, and with the vessel 4 through valved orifice 14. The passages 17, 18 are controlled by a doubleended needle valve 15, which is actuated by a float 21 sliding on the tube 6. When the vessel 4 is empty, the float falls, and the needle valve closes the passage 18 and opens the passage 17, so that the vessel is exhausted by the engine suction and petrol flows up from the tank through the branch 9 and tube 12. When the petrol has reached the desired level the float rises, closes the suction passage 17 and opens the atmospheric passage 18, whereupon the petrol flows through the orifice 14 into the vessel 5. In a modification, the tube 6 is replaced by a rod which is bored axially at each end, the inner end of each bore communicating with the vessel 4 by radial openings which are controlled by a sleeve valve carried by the float. Or a needle valve may control the suction connexion and a sleeve valve the atmospheric connexion.
