Abstract

1416344 Recovering fluorine values from waste gas ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 30 Jan 1973 [18 Feb 1972] 7745/72 Heading C1A Fluorine values are recovered from the waste gas from an electrolytic reduction cell for the production of aluminium by entraining alumina particles in a stream of the waste gas for a contact time sufficient to react with 90% of the HF therein, separating a major proportion of the alumina above a predetermined size in a first separation stage and the minor remaining proportion of fine alumina particles in a second separation stage, the preselected size being such that the larger particles contain less than 0À1% by weight of benzene-soluble tar. The alumina preferably has an average particle size of 50- 100 microns, not more than 10% being less than 40 microns. Preferably the finest particles of the second separation, containing a high proportion of iron particles, are separated, and the remainder heated, e.g. to 500-600‹ C. to reduce the carbon content and supplied with the coarser particles, to the aluminium cells: the exhaust gas from the heat-treatment may be recycled to the stream of waste gases between the separation stages, additional alumina being supplied at the same point.
