1416291 Knitting machines BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 26 April 1974 [27 April 1973] 18511/74 Heading D1C The needles 1 of a knitting, e.g. rotary cylinder, machine each have a hook 3 and a latch 2 pivoted in an opening in the needle shank for movement between a first position in which the latch closes the hook on its inner side and a second position (Fig. 2b) wherein the latch is retracted in the opening and a shoulder 2a projects rearwardly to facilitate latch closing, the needles being reciprocated axially at each feed to carry out knitting and at the same time their latches being opened and closed at appropriate points during the knitting cycle by pusher projections 8b, 8c on a plate 8 associated with each needle which is reciprocated by a cam track 12. The axial reciprocation of the needles is effected by springs 11 which engage recesses 9a at the lower ends of the needles, such springs being raised at each feed by a freely rotatable cam wheel R and returned under their own resilience in engagement with a cam 10. The direction of reciprocation of the plates 8 may be strictly radial as shown or inclined to the horizontal.
