Abstract

1415696 Making S G iron UNITED STATES PIPE & FOUNDRY CO 5 Oct 1972 [15 Oct 1971] 45905/72 Heading C7D To a low-sulphur bath of iron there are added at least two spheroidizing agents selected from Mg, Ce, Y, La, Nd and Pr, the amount of each individually being insufficient, but in total sufficient, to produce iron in which at least 90% of the graphite exists as well-formed spheroids, and in which the total content of spheroidizing agents is 0.03-0.12 by wt per cent. Preferably the agents are added as a composition of which they together do not exceed 12 by wt per cent and individually do not exceed 3% each. In one embodiment the additive comprises a mixture of two alloys, one containing not more than 3 by wt per cent of Mg as the sole spheroidizing agent and the other containing not more than 3% each of all other spheroidizing agents.
