Abstract

1415507 Sintered Al-alumina seal member ROPARCO Ltd 24 Sept 1973 [13 July 1972] 32877/72 Headings C7A and C7D A rubbing seal for use in an engine or compressor and formed of a composite material made of grains of plate like particles of aluminium or aluminiumbased alloy and of alumina in the proportions of 55 to 80% aluminium on aluminium based alloy and 20 to 45% alumina, said grains being non- crystalline and randomly orientated and each grain having the plate like particles of which it is composed arranged with their major axes generally parallel to one another. The seal may be prepared by plasma arc spraying aluminium or aluminium alloy (e.g. Al 4% Cu, 2% Ni, 1.5% Mg, 0.2% Ti or Al 12% Si, 1% Mg, 1% Cu, 2% Ni) and alumina (e.g. Al 2 O 3 2.5% TiO 2 ) on to a rotating mandrel, stripping the coating from the mandrel and fragmenting it in a hammer mill, compacting and sintering at 510‹C using a graphite release agent. The seal may be in the form of an apex or side seal for a rotating piston machine or piston ring for a reciprocating piston machine which may comprise a cast iron block or housing.
